I am known as the Dragonfly Queen. I am fascinated with the beauty and grace of dragonflies. I have a dragonfly tattoo and am surrounded by dragonflies of all types. I love that those who know me think of me when they see a dragonfly. There is something in the spirit of these magical creatures that resonates with me. Let me see if I can explain.
Let’s start with a few facts about the Dragonfly. They start out as nymphs living in water, then transition to life in the air. A nymph will transform into a beautiful dragonfly. Once able to fly as a dragonfly, it can no longer return to living in the water. Quite a rebirth story, huh?
Eighty percent of a dragonfly’s brain power is used for sight. There are 30,000 tiny lenses on a dragonfly’s eyes, allowing it to see in all 360 degrees around it. While they don’t see details well, they see a wider spectrum of colors than humans do. Perhaps they see what we cannot.
Dragonflies exhibit amazing flying skills. They can fly up to 36 mph. They can hover, fly backwards, straight up, straight down and to either side. While flapping their wings a mere 30 times a minute. Pretty impressive considering bees flap their wings 300 times a minute and flies and mosquitoes flap their wings 600-1000 times a minute. I wish I could fly like that!
I believe animals have much to teach us if we pay attention. In studying the habits and symbolism of dragonflies, here is a list of some of the things the dragonfly spirit is known for:
- Transformation
- Change
- Seeing through illusions
- Adaptability
- Light
- Joy
- Delve deep into illusions
- Bringing light into darkness
- Shine true colors
- Rebirth
- Reflect light
- Wisdom
- Transparency
- Pay attention to deeper thoughts and desires
- Illumination
- Harmony
- Agility
The above photo was taken while kayaking near my home. I was excited and mesmerized to watch these beauties. What a powerful reflection of love, that when mating, dragonflies form a beautiful heart. The dragonfly spirit reminds us we are light and can reflect light and love in powerful ways should we choose to do so. I like to think that the Dragonfly Spirit resonates so deeply within me because maybe, just maybe, some of that Spirit exists in me.
